Is there a reason why so many lenses are out of stock right now?

I've been looking to buy my next Nikon lens for a little while and can't help but notice like every desireable lens is sold out. I'm semi-new to the DSLR scene so I'm just wondering if this is the normal cyclical nature of the market or what? I know they released new models of DSLR's, but why is this impacting lenses?

My guess, natural disasters. The first was the earthquake followed by the tsunami impacting the Japan plant, then the flooding in Thailand.

Not only for Nikon's own plants but their whole supply chain.

What particular lens are you looking for? I know the big telephoto lenses are always in short supply.

Ah that makes sense. I'm just looking for a 50mm prime, preferably the 1.4 but even the 1.8 is sold out everywhere.

Nikon's plant in Thailand has been flooded. It's still hard to find a D7000. I managed to buy mine when Amazon had 3 in stock a few weeks ago.

Probably doesn't help either that the D4 and D800 are in pre-order right now and a lot of people are probably buying a lens or two to go with them.

I've been trying to find a wide angle or telephoto E-mount lens for my nex-c3 but they're out of stock everywhere. Anyone selling one right now is price gouging like crazy too.
