Is there a reason to wait to buy a PS3 until a new Blu-Ray is in it?

My main reason for interest in a PS3 is for the Blu-Ray player. I've read some places 'wait til the fall when the Blu-Ray will get improved', but no details. Any info here?

From the little I read on it the PS3 had the best BR on it at time of release and to get an equivalent on a standalone would cost a good bit more than the PS3. Not sure about future products though.

Don't know what they mean by improved but the Blu Ray player in the PS3 can be updated. As it is right now, the PS3 is suppose to be amoung one of if not the best blu ray players on the market. The PS3 is suppose to be very futher proof also cause of being able to have it's firmware updated. I wouldn't worry about buying one now you will be fine.

Unless you are planning to dump a monstrous amount of money on your A/V setup, a PS3 will be more than adequate for your Blu-ray needs. It is one of the VERY few profile 2.0 player and can decode every HD codec out. If you want a great Blu-ray player for a reasonable cost, a $399 is perfect now and for your future needs. And not only can you play Blu-ray movies on it, the PSN store has now added HD movies you can rent (download) online.

I haven't heard anything about the Blu-Ray hardware in the PS3 being improved. Certainly the PS3 has shown itself to be the most capable Blu-Ray player though because its software is easily updated.

I hear that blu-stream is being built into the PS5 I'd wait and buy that since the resolution is about 80 times better than blu-ray.

It won't be blu anymore at that point. It will be chartreus.

Yep, I have watched my PS3 go from a Blu-Ray profile 1, to 1.1, and finally to 2.0. All via firmware updates.

Only thing the PS3 is missing is being able to work with my Harmony remote out of the box. Need to buy that adapter still. :[

I just applied for the Sony Credit card which the website advertises a $100 credit on the first purchase over $299. I plan on using it to buy a $400 PS3 and get it for $300 for the same purpose, a good Blu Ray.

Question: To get the $100 credit, do I have to buy it through the Sony online store or can it be any store? Also, it shows that offer as available currently, but how do I know it isn't a "cashed" web page?

I don't think the blu ray in the PS3 has any reliability issues, so even if they do replace it with a smaller more efficient one it probably won't make a difference.

There are currently 2 Sony CC deals going. One you must buy through the Sonystyle website.
The one I used allows you to buy from any Sony authorized retailer. The wording is pretty clear in both webpages, so which did you use?

Where did you see this? I've seen no such thing.

This I think.

no, and the PS3 is also known as one of the better bluray players out there because of the support.

sure all bluray players are capable of being updated via the internet, but the actual updates and support for them are no where NEAR as up to date as the PS3 is.

It tells you under #2, that it must be purchased at a SonyStyle store, including SonyStyle.com, within 45 days of account opening.

This is the other offer, and it still works.

No, there is no reason to wait. It probably won't cause a price drop, and even v1.0 PS3s have been fully upgraded via firmware

Thanks for the replies. I did some more looking and it looks like the 'new' systems are the new 80GB system in September, not a new Blu-Ray on it.

The waters are still a little muddy though, a chart I saw showed the new models dropping PS2 compatibility, and before that, some units with hardware PS2 compatibility, some SW.

The new units also lose SACD support.

So, off the top of my head as knowing almost nothing about PS3, it looks like the older 60GB system with HW PS2 compatibility and SACD support might be the best?

I'm probably missing some issue with the choices.🙂

I have the 60 GB system with HW PS2 compatibility and I'm very happy with it. Plus you can always swap out the hard drive for a bigger one in the future if you run out of space.

Like you, my main interest in a PS3 is the BD player. By Christmas, I am expecting BD players of equal quality of the PS3 to be both available and cheaper than the PS3. I am willing to wait because there are not enough Blu-Ray movies out there yet which interest me enough. I figure that either by Christmas or shortly afterwards this will change.

Last year, everyone bought HDTVs for Christmas. This year, I expect BD players are going to be hot sellers. Throughout 2009, we will see a lot more movies on Blu-Ray since the sales of BD Players for Christmas will increase the demand. That's my theory at least.

They'll have gone to plaid by then.
