Is there a reason Sony Memory Stick Duos are way more expensive than regular old flash memory?

Other than it being a proprietary technology, is there any good reason that a 512MB Memory Stick Duo is significantly more expensive than 512 of a regular old SD Flash Memory?

That's the whole reason I asked. I want to get a PSP, but to do some of the truly cool stuff with them you need at least a 1gb stick, and to do the super cool stuff you need a 2gb stick which run around $370. Ouch!

It doesn't seem quite as bad to me since I'm used to buying xD cards, last one was $70 for 512MB. So getting 1GB for the PSP@$100 is alright.

proprietary format. they've sold enough devices that require it that they can charge exactly as much as the consumer will pay. and u will pay out the nose apparently. sony very good at this
