Is there a phone app and/or laptop program that I can load and then walk around my house and yard to see the signal quality on my phone and laptop?

Hi Jack!
So, I have now tweeked, although the term might should be monkeyed or borked, my router with Tomato. Ironically, I set out to increase my signal, but I have lowered it from 71 mW to 40mW.

If my goal is a better signal, it might simply be better achieved by physically moving my router around. However, I need some feedback from my phone, or my laptop to see where the signal is poor. It seems to me that some sort of software must exist for the laptop, or app for the phone, in my case an android, that would in real time show me the signal strength, and possibly signal quality. I don't know what that sort of software would be called, I only assume it must exist because it seems like it would be very useful. Maybe I only need it on either the phone or the laptop, but might as well check both out incase something makes the antenas recieve differently because of the angle it is in on the device as naturally held.

Does this make any sense? Is my question too stupid, or am I thinking about this the right way?

The program that Jack linked to will do exactly what you want to do on your laptop.

Not only will it show the signal strength and quality of your own wireless router in real time, but it will also show you every wireless signal within range in real time so you can see what is around you, how strong the signals are, and what channels they are using so that you can choose the least congested channel for your own wireless router.

Unlike Wired Network Wireless depends on the environment.

Example, two totally identical Homes but one of them has a big Fish Aquarium in the same room as the Wireless Router (o5 somewhere in the path of the Wireless) and the Wireless service will not be as strong around the house as in the one without the Aquarium.

I.e, in many cases No matter what the use would do there is No Good solution with only one Wireless sources and a secondary installation is needed.

The good news is that these Wireless thingies are so inexpensive that by skipping one or two unhealthy meals One can gain personal health and buy a second Wireless Router to act as an Access Point.

Example to High Power Wireless with Giga switch for $46 after rebate.

OK, getting 50% in the bathroom. Not so good is it?
Ok, put the router on top of a carboard box on top of the kitchen table.
Getting 70% in the same spot in the bathroom.
Good enough I hope.
