Is there a pre-paid or pay-as-you-go option to use wireless laptop w/out wifi?

I have a laptop and would love to be able to surf, etc... while traveling (car, etc..)....

I realize that if I am not in an area that has wifi, my only current option is to tether my cell phone (tmobile)
to my laptop but that provides incredibly slow speed.

Is there an option where I can buy a dongle/usb card (no monthly fees) from a company and pay a higher charge per minute/data rate?

For the 2-3 times a year when I travel, I would love to have this option..

Please let me know what other options I should consider....

Thanks in advance...

Virgin has a mobile broadband pay-as-you-go (pre-paid cards) option. I saw it for sale recently in a store, I think it was WalMart.
The dongle was $75, and the cards were in $20, $40, $60 denominations.

Depending on your travel patterns, Clear may also be an option. It's usually faster than the 3G services and the monthly price is only $40. They also have a $50 package that includes 3G coverage, which looking at the Verizon packages may still end up being cheaper.
