Is there a point to having 24gb of ram?

There is a 2x8gb kit on sale at newegg for $90. Should I get it? I have 12gb currently and I leave my computer on all the time. I have a feeling that with 24gb of ram I could leave a bunch of my favorite apps and games in memory and my loading times would be practically instant.

Should I jump on this or wait a bit?

My desktop has 32GB of RAM and I use most of it on a regular basis. I do however have a bunch of VM's running for testing to use it all though. Like everything else it depends on what you are doing.

If you're gonna fill it up with applications that you don't use, your computer will probably become slower depending on the programs, and an ssd will give you more space for less money. Apart from having applications running just in case, do you actually really need more than 12 GB of RAM? If not, I would advise not to buy more.

You can probably leave your favorite apps running all of the time now and SuperFetch should preload other apps/games as it learns your usage habits. I never shut down my primary apps and I've only got 8G in my laptop.
