Is there a PC lap top that is similar to the Powerbook?

If i can avoid it, i'd like to get a Windows lap top over the Powerbook. I really like the design of the powerbook, but don't want to get Mac applications since I have everything I need for PC. Cost is not a deciding factor since my school can give me a fat discount off the Powerbook. So here are my considerations for the PC lap top:

- sleek design. thin and portable
- 15 inch wide screen
- magnesium alloy case
- around $1500

is there anything out there like that or do i have to settle for the powerbook? and no i'm not a metrosexual, but i really like something that doesn't look clunky.

The Asus V6V is very similar to the powerbook. It even shares the same 15.1" widescreen format. Features an Alloy case, a decent video card x600 64mb. Windows XP Pro instead of home and a global 2 year warranty. Overall a very nice machine both aesthetically and functionally. However it'll probably run you closer to $1700 not $1500. But, as a powerbook owner I can assure you this thing will run significantly faster than any powerbook you can buy.

good luck

The Asus V6V looks like an amazing bit of machinery. I've seen a few other laptops like it, but considering that it's Asus, you'll have a hard time doing better.
However, Asus has rather iffy tech support, from what I've heard. If you buy their laptops through a reseller who assembles it for you (like JNCS.com), you'll likely be better off, as they'll do the tech support.

EDIT:
Remember, the Powerbook is a darn good laptop. Are you really sure you want Windows over Mac?

Thanks for the suggestion guys. The asus laptop look sleek. I'm not going to rule out the Powerbook yet. My only concern is that it's still using the G4 processor which is pretty old now. If it was a G5, i'd have no hesitation on getting it. Just concern that the current powerbooks will get obsolete fast.

"Obsolescence" is relative.
Apple's computers have a longer working life than comparable PCs. (A 10-year-old Macintosh (7100, early Powermac) is still quite useful for surfing the web and word processing. On the other hand, I would have trouble getting rid of a 10-year-old PC. Also, the G5 will likely never find it's way into a notebook; the power requirements and heat dissapation are just too high. Instead, the new Powerbooks will run Intel processors, most likely the Pentium-M.
Also, a 1.5ghz G4 can render Photoshop well enough for darn near anyone, and they actually work quite well for programming.

The Asus V6V does NOT have a widescreen display. Maybe take a look at the Asus W3V which has a 14" widescreen, or the Z70va which has a 15.4" widescreen. I know the guy who runs ProPortable which is a good place to buy Asus stuff, they do a good job and have great support. Take a look at Asus stuff at http://www.proportable.com/

Well, reportedly the first Intel Powerbooks will be out in Feb 2006. The 15" is to be released first. You should be able to dual boot Windows and OSX. The new powerbooks are said to be .75" thick. They are shaping up to be sweet. I'll be recieving two grand in March and hope they are released by then.

Well, it's not $1500, but the Asus W2V is essentially the 17" Powerbook with x86 architecture inside (virtually same chassis...Asus didn't have to make that big of a stretch since they're the ODM for Powerbooks). Otherwise, you could go for the Asus W1N, which is essentially a 15" Powerbook with x86 architecture inside for $1655. The specs on the W1N are nearly identical to the Powerbook, except for a little less powerful GPU and older memory. However, you do get a higher resolution LCD.

Obsolescence is indeed relative. If new products are not released (i.e. G5 based laptop platforms) then the older products are still king of that hill.

Correct, the V6V does not have widescreen. Also, from what I was told the screen is disappointing:
