Is there a PC flight combat sim that plays like a console?

Got good info here before (ref. A.M.'s Alice:)), so I'll try again. I've played a few combat flight sims on Playstation consoles. I liked seeing the plane in front, and controlling everything with a gamepad (i.e. speed, weapons, direction, some yaw and pitch, etc.). These games also compensated for physics, such as stalling when speed dropped too much, and gravity. However, I have tried a couple of PC sims, and the d!mn things are so complicated, it takes all the fun out of it. I don't want to have to use a mouse and any number of buttons on a keyboard just to fly around and blow stuff up. Are there any PC sims that don't have such a slow learning curve and play like the games I remember? Thanks for any input.

Crimson Skies flies more like a console than a true sim (forgiving flight model, multiple choice of POVs, minimal button requirements) and is a darn fun game to boot.

Comanche 4 and Crimson Skies are closer to 'arcade' than 'sim' I'd say.

Crimson Skies is just downright fun. "Personal" dogfighting (as in with machine guns, not guided missiles) and barnstorming are what it's all about. fun fun fun. Pouring some hot lead into a zepplin just as it opens it's broadside cannon doors, going inverted and pulling away before the machine gun nests get a bead on you... fun fun fun.

If you want some bi-wing action, Red Ace Squadron is pretty cool.

It would probably be best to play it with a stick or a gamepad with a throttle slider on it though. Otherwise, it's fairly easy to stall the plane in turns. :)

Isn't Commanche 4 the new game that is really graphics and CPU intensive, the one that is starting to become one of the benchmarks for testing new video cards? If so, would that run on a celeron and PCI video card w/acceptable FPS?

Per the system specs in your signature, yes it would run acceptably. You may have to turn down a little bit of the eye candy, but not much at all. The game is being used for benchmarks alot just because it's dripping with special effects. Most of them are completely unneeded for gameplay and immersiveness. It's fluff. (think lens flare)

honestly I didn't finish comanche 4.
