Is there a Opensource Acrobat Reader Replacement for Windows XP and Vista?

Scarpozzi

Acrobat Reader is crap. It constantly fails on Vista when my wife tries to view PDFs in a web browser. I just waited 5 minutes to shutdown my XP box "nicely" while Acrobat got stuck on something and finally threw an error. (both are running Acrobat Reader 8)

Is there an Open Source replacement out there that isn't so bloated and crappy? I was happy many versions ago when it just worked and didn't have all the issues I've been seeing lately. I don't know if it's Adobe's fault since Microsoft often changes their libraries for security reasons....

haven't used it myself 🙂

Seconded...This is a really fast/lightweight pdf reader compared to adobe. So far I haven't hit any sites that I can't open a pdf from with foxit.

Just one further thought. If you really want Open Source Software for this purpose, then you might try installing GhostScript and GSView. GSView isn't exactly what I'd call a super deluxe PDF file viewer, but it IS actually OSS.

Yeah, Foxit is not OSS. I like to support OSS, but I still use Foxit because it is the best thing I've found and definately far better than Adobe Reader.

just thought i'd uninstall adobe reader (and give foxit a try)
didn't realise reader weighed in at 126 mb!!!!

Version 9 will probably ship on 5 Blu-Ray discs.

lmao
then again, many a true word.... 🙂

Adobe Reader and Acrobat are easily the worst pieces of bloatware I've seen among standard office programs. I switched to Foxit on my own system some years ago but still have to put up with it on the university machines. The browser plugin is twice as bad; it's amazing how long it takes to load even small files and how often it locks up altogether.

I've been a religious user of GhostScript and GSView for years now. Sure it's not the best, but it's fast and extremely lightweight.
