Is there a noticeable difference between an Intel 2.4c and 3.0c ??

Keep in mind my main system is a Dell PII 333 and my hobby system is an Athlon 1.0.

The processor for my new system will be an Intel 2.4c /2.6c/2.8c/3.0c.

I am going with 1GB of Mushkin Level II running DC and my current video card is a 128MB ti4200 I am not a big gamer, I mostly will use the system for video editing.

Will I see a big differeance between a 2.4c and 3.0c or is my best bet a 2.6c? (I will probably not be oc'ing)

Well, it should theoretically be a 25% performance increase going from the 2.4 to the 3.0

If you were overclocking, I would suggest going for the 2.4 or 2.6, because the lower multiplier will allow you to get a high FSB overclock, which really speeds up the system

However, as you're not overclocking, go for whichever you can afford

Incremental upgrades really aren't so big. You'll only shave some small percent off of your encode times.

BTW, no need to look at a 2.4c. Intel's way of getting rid of the 2.4c is by pricing the 2.6c at the same cost, and that's what they've done. IE the 2.6c is a better deal.

If you can wait 6 weeks Intel has a price drop scheduled for feb. 15 and the prescotts will be out. in lots of 1000 the prices are supposed to be

2.8 178
3.0 218
3.2 278
3.4 417

Prescotts and Northwoods are supposed to be very close in price.

Besides the upcoming price drop, the best bang for the buck right now is the 2.6c..

P4 2.6c is probably best bang for the buck, and if you really want that little extra, you can overclock it a bit, probably without too much of an issue.

thanks again to everyone. I have decided to hold off until 2/15 to verify that any mobo I choose will accept a prescott processor as well as get a faster processor for a better price.

maybe by that time I can find more benchmarks that a 64bit AMD will outperform a p4 for video-editing and go that route.

worst case senario I get neither and put the money towards my toughest decision ....G35 sedan or the new Acura TL.

G35 Sedan hands down! Don't get me wrong I love Hondas but the G35 is so sweet plus it's RWD.

The 2.6C is the best bang for the buck right now but I would do like you said and wait until late Jan early Feb to see the price cuts.

Another vote for the G35. My friend (lucky ba$tard) has one and it's a very nice car. Why anyone would spend a few $$$ less for a loaded Altima is beyond me.

You like the sedan? Personally I think the sedan looks terrible, if I were getting a G35 I would go for the coupe or (since I'm more of a performance enthusiast) I would get a 350z

Don't wanna go too off topic but with a wife, a 3 month old, and puppy a coupe is out of the picture.

In a few years, however, my 3rd/weekend car will be a 996 or a GTR (coming over in 05 or 06).
