Is there a noticable diff between ATA33 and ATA 66/100

with the newer ata100 7200rpm hdds you can get STR of up to 41Mb/s on the outer edge so you'll see some difference in benchmarks but unsure that you'll be able to tell the difference between the 2 in usual everyday tasks!

Isn't there also some overhead on the IDE channel as well? I was under the impression that the best STR on an ATA33 channel would be more like ~25-28 MB/sec, which is pretty far from the ~40 MB/sec you could get on ATA66.

I just set up a comp for my brother using an old WD ata33 drive till the new drive arrived.. It was so slow, when the new drive arrived and I put it in place it made a world of diff. a fast cpu,and DDR can be very badly choked with a slow drive.
With the ata33 drive the 1gig t-bird with DDR performed like a 233 with pc 66 sdram.

It depnds on the HD you have. If its a good one with STR in the 40+ range, yes it will make a difference. If its a slower drive, probably not.

running the same HD on the same PC in both ata33 mode or ata66 makes NO REAL NOTICABLE DIFFERENCE in performance. The only way you can tell if ata66 is really working is to do a benchmark test. Ata66 or ata100 only helps on read burnst rates, it is NOT a sustained reading increase.

Which HD is it? I have 3 PC's here. One has a WD 7200 RPM ATA66 15 Gig drive. It can do ~ 25 MB/sec STR. ATA33/66/100 doesn't make a difference. My other 2 PCs have an IBM 60 GXP and a Maxtor D740X. These will do ~ 43 MB/sec STR. ATA33 would cripple the performance of either of those HD's. If you have a HD that can do above ~ 30 MB/sec STR, you are exceeding ATA33 capabilities.

I just replaced a WD 20 gig 5400rpm ata33 hdd with a new maxtor 80 gig 7200 u133 hdd. Along with that switch I added the Maxtor u133 controller card that came with the drive. Now it's not fair to compare those two drives. What is fair is to say that my other drive, a maxtor 40 gig 7200rpm ata66 drive, is definately faster with the new controller card in. My MB only supports up to 33 onboard. We're not talking seconds here mind you, but stuff on the 40 gig load faster and everything so far is better. That's just from everyday, normal use. I haven't benchmarked any of them.

Depends on the drive. With IDE drives reaching 50MB/s, and the real world limit of ATA33 around 30MB/s, you should definitely notice a difference without having to consult benchmarks.

I have to agree, you will hardly notice the difference between the ATA 33 and the 66, or the ATA 100. You will see a difference between a 5200 RPM and a 7200 RPM of course.

If its the same gen WD 20 Gig as my 7200 rpm 15 Gig, it wont make a difference. Those drives are only good for ~ 25 MB/sec. You have to find out what model it is.

i think i may just stick with the onboard IDE. It should be fast enough, its a Intel SE440BX, PIII 450 CPU, 256 PC133 Ram, 20GB 7200 RPM drive... its going to be running XP Pro on it. its for my gf. Win2k Pro ran pretty good on it, and that was with a crappy 5400RPM drive in it and a PII300 CPU...
