There has been an outbreak of some kind of virus on campus, and we in the School of Business have been hit particularly hard.
The result of the infection is that the virus starts trying to infect other computers, and in doing so sends out huge amounts of network traffic.
DoIT detected this outburst at 4:15AM this morning and took steps to wall off Grainger Hall from the rest of campus. The result being that
almost 50 PCs have been what is called "blackholed" by DoIT. These PCs do not have access to the Internet or mail servers. In addition, DoIT
is also blocking a port commonly used by Microsoft machines to communicate with one another. PCs within Grainger may also have difficulty
in accessing file and print servers.
As of 11:00AM, no one on campus knows what this virus is or how to get rid of it. I have worked on one particular machine for most the morning. It is still infected and Norton Antivirus does not detect anything wrong with the machine.
I'll send out more email as soon as I know what is going on.
