its been more than a year... maybe the sensor from the xt? usable iso 400 seems to be nonexistant with ccd sensors.

If high ISO performance is real important to you there's the Fujifilm FinePix F10. Although it's a point and shoot without true manual controls. Pity too because the sensor seems awesome for a compact.

what exactly is ISO? and why would you want to have something with higher ISO (looks fuzzier)?

Sensitivity (ISO) - better than I could explain it.

In real world terms that means for fast/action shots there's less light required so you can use faster shutter speeds to better capture the action. For low-light/night shots: faster shutter speed will result in less blur from hand-shake for snapshots without a tripod and flash, or with a tripod should result in less time-lapse blur.

Why would anyone want a PowerShot Pro when the RebelXT is within striking distance for a few hundred bux more?

bigger, out of the price range, lenses cost quite a bit more (28-70 f/2.8, which is slightly slower over that range in comparison to the pro1, is $1,104.95 at b&h by itself, to cover 70 to 200 is anohter $1099.95, though probably a litle faster over that range), it doesn't fit my hand extremely well (not sure about the pro1 on this) and i already have two SLRs

b/c you'll spend double that on lenses?
You can start an arsenal with a 50mm f:1.8 that can be had for little as $70, and less than $50 for a good used one. A sigma 18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 DC can be had for as little as $100, or a combination kit 18-50mm ++ 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC for around $250.

You can then graduate to better lenses if you want to get more into photography. It is likely that you would want to upgrade your camera in 3-5 years (maybe less), and the resell value of the Rebel is going to be higher than PowerShot (it might be hard to fetch a decent price for the PowerShot in 5 years). And, all of your lenses can be carry forward to the next body.

Those are the fast lenses that you are looking at and it is going to be large due to more & bigger glasses. The 28-70mm f:2.8 L lens is design to accommodate 35mm camera (36x24mm) instead of DSLR (22.2 x 14.8mm), therefore the lens is physically larger than a DSLR, and this lens is going to be much sharper & more refine than the kit-lens, Sigma, and the built in PowerShot. The expose area of the Powershot sensor is about 1/15 the area of the 35mm, therefore the Powershot aperature is about 2 stops smaller than 35mm making the lens physically much smaller (PowerShot f:2.8 = 35mm at f:5.6).

PowerShot lens is never going to give you the resolving power that you get with the DSLR because PS Pro lens is design to accommodate a puny 8.80 x 6.60 mm sensor.
