i'm in the market for my first ipad, and was wondering if there is any news about a new one coming out soon? since i'm out of the loop of ipads as i've never owned one, a quick search of their history showed that they did some reveals usually in march or so. but i also did not find any news articles talking about one coming out or anything, nor do i know about apple's events where they do show off stuff.

anyone have any links or info on if one is coming out sooner rather than later?

i'm not in desperate need of one this instant, as it's going to primarily be for the remote in my theater (as well as messing around while on the couch and stuff), and i'm currently just using my phone as the remote for my theater. so if one is supposed to come out in the next month or so i will probably hold off. but if there is nothing until the fall i'd probably snag one sooner.

No one can be sure exactly, but the iPad 4 came out this past fall, and it's entirely possible that Apple has moved to releasing all their new iDevices in the fall now.

The iPad4 is pretty powerful, even if a new one were to come out the 4 isn't going to be made obsolete anytime soon.

If you want it now, get it now. Don't spend you time waiting for next apple thing to buy or else you'll perpetually be waiting.

It would not make sense to have a new full-size iPad now - they have come out with two in the past year. It has been rumored that a Retina-equipped iPad Mini may come out this spring, though.

Or buy a used iPad 4 on ebay/craigslist and resell it when the new one comes out. They hold there value well.

oh i know, but if one WAS just around the corner, i'd wait since i'm not in dire needs of one right now.

thanks though i will probably look into purchasing within the next month or so. don't want a mini so if a new one comes out this spring i don't care really.

and i know we wouldn't know 100% until they revealed it, but i just wasn't sure if there was an "official" rumor like the ones that were around before most of their major releases.

I would bet on the 5th gen iPad being released in the fall. Releasing the 4th gen only 7 months after the 3rd gen was a big mistake IMO for Apple. If you "obsolete" tech products that quickly, the market doesn't forget.

Take for example Olympus, who was replacing its PEN cameras every 6 months or so a couple of years ago. They had excess inventory that they couldn't get rid of, having to have fire sales to move product, and right now these old cameras are selling for pocket change. Many of the buyers who bought these products were understandably pissed off and it hurt sales of subsequent iterations.

Demand for iPads is in a different league altogether but if Apple were to do the <1 year iteration cycle again, I think it would definitely cost them in sales and excess inventory.

The 4th gen iPad didn't make the 3rd gen obsolete in any way. I challenge you to find anything in the store that says "runs only on 4th gen iPad".

They delivered an early update in performance and connectivity.

Yes I really think the only reason the 4 was released so early was to keep the lightning connector in line with all of their products.

But yeah if in a month you're ready to buy check out the Mac rumour websites for any news they'll give a good indication of what to expect.

It didn't, but the one killer feature the iPad 4 had that the 3 didn't was LTE. It is a night and day difference between LTE and 3G, and that alone did it for me.

Um, nope? The iPad 3rd generation has LTE. Mine is on LTE right now.

It obsoleted in price. Someone buying an iPad 3 more than two weeks before the 4 came out got screwed out of a $100.

That's how all product updates work. I don't see how that makes this an extraordinary circumstance.

It was out of the ordinary. It didn't release at the usual annual pace like previous iPads, it launched well within a year. So iPad 3 owners got screwed out of potential savings. Instead of owning a device that would hold a certain value until the usual spring refresh, that value took a big hit many months earlier than expected.

I maintain that if you're buying technology for its value retention and a difference of 5 months is a make or break situation, you're doing it wrong.

They had to update it for the new connector if they were going to get accessories makers to switch to Lightning entirely. They couldn't have two 'new' products out with different accessory experiences that should have been the same.
