Is there a need for me to get dd-wrt firmware

All I really care about is basic security and basic router function. The buffalo firmware seems to have the security that I need (WPA2, Mac filtering, etc) and the ability to forward ports.

Will dd-wrt make anything "better?" All that i've really seen is an improvement in user interface.

You can stay with the Buffalo firmware.

As is, even without the Flashing capacity it is the best of the sub $100 Wireless Routers.

With the original firmware it can be secured at WPA-AES level, can do IP reservation, and even WDS.

You need to switch to 3rd party.

If you want to boost power.

Need Qos to control individual computers bandwidth.

Use WPA in Client Mode.

And other more advanced features, along the line of VPN, RADIUS, etc.

hmmmm maybe I will use Qos to throttle the bandwidth to my sister's computer when she's being annoying

I definitely like the buffalo router I picked up. The default firmware didn't do what I wanted to do, but overall looked very very nice.
