most are non-refundable, but you can buy a full fare/refundable ticket online

but they can often be applied to another trip at a later date

you can call the airline and talk to a human about your situation and see how it goes

I've canceled tickets that were purchased online before. Just call up the airline company, and have them defer the flight to an undisclosed date.

I had a ticket once that I ended up not being able to go on the trip so I called the airline and talked to a human and I got credit for another flight. They took away a portion of the ticket as a transfer fee or something but it was better than losing the whole ticket.
