Is there a major performance impact of running single channel with C2D?

My abit ab9 pro has issues with running dual channel, so I currently have my ram running in single channel. Last I checked, ram bandwidth wasn't that important, but going from dual channel to single channel must have some sort of impact. So far I haven't noticed anything wrong, usually playing some bf2 and watching some movies and surfing.

Has anyone ever done any tests comparing single channel versus dual in a more modern system like the core2duo? If anyone has any input I'd appreciate it. I'd like to see if its worth RMA'ing the board to run dual channel.

Btw, I'm running a e6400 at 8*400 with 2gb of crucial ballistix ddr-800 at 4-4-4-12.

It all really boils down to raw bandwidth. If you calculate the available bandwidth provided by your current FSB speed, that should give you some idea of how much memory bandwidth you can theoretically support given Intel's current platforms.

for example, a system with an FSB of 266 mhz (1066 mhz effective) would require DDR2-1066 single-channel for bandwidth saturation, while in dual-channel operation, it would only require DDR2-533. Of course, memory bandwidth will also be affected by timings . . . loose timings might require you to run the memory a little faster than DDR2-1066 to saturate a 266 mhz FSB.

Of course, the real question is: do you need memory bandwidth equal to or greater than the FSB at all times? Perhaps not, but it's a good idea to stay at that level of memory bandwidth.
