as post says if there enough difference between the 7800gt and gtx to justify another 100 bucks. i can simply OC the gt to GTx speeds cant i? PLZ let me get your feedback on this soon wanting to order my comp next couple days.

The GTX has 4 more pipes 24 instead of 20. While Ocing can get the performance CLOSE to stock GTX levels its not quite there.

Don't get me wrong they are still great cards. But there is more than just the clock speeds.

well

the 7800GT is 20 pipelines, and 7 vertex shaders and i think stock clocks are 400Mhz core and 1000mhz memory. though alot of manufacturers are actually shipping cards with decent factory overclocks

the GTX has a further 4 pipes, bringing it to 24pipes, and an 8th vertex shader. the stock clocks for this are 430Mhz and 1200Mhz, again manufacturers are selling cards with decent overclocks

Nvidia have learnt though from the 6800 series. (ie where you could buy a GT and oc to an Ultra, or where you could buy a 6800U/ LE, unlock it in riva tuner and overclock it to ultra) so i dont think you can buy a GT in the hope of turning it into a GTX

as far as performance goes, obviously the GTX wins hands down.

but these two cards are CPU limited in a good chunk of games so actually perform the same.

if your wanting to play at Hi res and high AA and AF settings then plunking the extra down for the GTX will probably be worth it. if your stuck at say 12x10 (LCD) then maybes it might be a better option to save a little money and get a GT. then you can spend the savings toward a faster CPU or something. and if your not scared.....OC the GT ( 470odd Mhz is what seems to be the oc most are getting)

I would go for the GT and use the extra $100 towards some more memory, another hard drive, sound card,...whatever. I just got my 7800gt today :D but I haven't installed it yet.

I bought a GT for a build i'm doing for someone. The GTX didn't seem worth the extra $100 to me, based on all the benchies I read.

If you can afford the GTX I think you'll be glad you bought it. In FEAR 10 FPS can be the difference between playable and not.

My Policy on CPU and Video card Purchases had never changed. Always buy the best combo of the 2 you can afford. The only reason I or anybody else would recommend a 3000+ is if your overclocking. If your not overclocking I would get he GT since it performs better then the 6800u on several benchies even on slower CPUs. The GT and the GTX on ther other hand unless your playing on >1600x res the GTX will perform completely like a GT. If your overclocking then the GTX would be he better buy since you would then be able take advantage of it, but again only if you can afford it. The extra performance isn't worth putting yourself in extra debt, or forcing you to eat roman noodles till next pay check.

Linkage

Play with all the eye candy, on a GTX. Or drop the eye candy on a GT and get double the frames. For a game like fear it would be dropping the eye candy for the sake of playability. Or in my case, continuing to play BF2... ;)
