There used to be a little section off to the right of the posting area with smileys, but i dont see them anymore. Anyway to get that back or at least a list or something of smileys? thanks

yes,but it only works when quoting. It'd be nice if the quick reply window at the bottom of the thread had these available as well...or am I making some newb mistake?

It's there, for some stupid reason it's all the way at the bottom of the page. Some admin should get off their arse and make the layout more usable.

Your best bet would be to memorize them, and type them in by hand. I pretty much only use ASCII smilies. I started doing that because smilies on some sites suck, and this way I can keep my style from site to site. They've become a little passe, so it's more unique than it used to be.

No, its on the right hand side will all the available smilys

As lxskllr mentioned it's a good idea just to memorize the ascii for the most used ones. The editor will automatically convert the ascii smiliey to an image.
