Is there a limit for external storage via USB for TVs?

My buddy has a 52" Samsung LED tv (he didn't divulge the model number) and he's having a problem when he tries to connect anything larger than a 64GB storage device to his USB port. Is there a limit or does his tv need to be configured to handle larger storage limits? He says it just won't detect the larger devices but his 64GB device shows up just fine.

Any ideas?

You may need a self powered USB device.

Could it be the file system? Aka the 64GB drive is FAT or ExFAT (which I know works on all modern Samsung TVs) while the larger drives aren't?

There is no limit of external storage in usb.
