price difference is about 150 dollars on dell website. what do you think?

go for it or no?

What models are you looking at? E520 and E521? Not a huge difference, without OC (and you can't with Dell) the x2 4600 should be a bit faster than an E4300. But not $150 faster. 😀

What do you want to do with it?

If you plan to play games, the video card is ten times as important as any speed difference between the two.

An X2 3800+ with an nvidia 8800GTS would bash a 12 GHz core 2 with nvidia 7300LE into a bloody pulp.

really, i though intel core 2 duo is the best so far. you are right though i am looking between e520 and e521 at dell

intel core 2 duo 1.86ghz
and x2 g4 4600.

will be using them for gaming with a radeon brand x1900xt 512 mb which i have already purchased!

If you already have the video card, don't buy the E52X model. It won't fit. See my post in your other thread. 😀

You need to look at the XPS 410.

Fixed. You never know what's coming, who'd have guessed Intel'd finally get their act together and overtake AMD?

Surely though if you're going to put in an x1900XT then you're losing your warranty by breaking the seal sticker on the chassis that tells if it has been opened? If you're losing the warranty anyway you may as well see what kind of overclock you can squeeze out of the E4300.

That's total BS. Dell warranty is still in tact if you upgrade the video card.

Agreed.

Why? Just check out Anandtech's review of the C2D and you'll see the E6300 is no better for gaming than AMD's 4600. It depends on the game, but overall they look about equal. Review.

Save $150 and get the 4600.

Okay... when comparing C2D to AMD X2, there's a huge difference between "AMD peeps in denial" and "Anand Lal Shimpi's thorough gaming benchmarks"

I'm gonna have to trust Anand on this one.

It seems like the X2 4600 and the C2D 6300 (don't you love that dyslexic numbering mismatch) are comparable. If that is your budget, and it is pretty fixed, it looks like the 4600 has a small edge on the 6300. If you can go up another $20 or so to a C2D 6400, I think the tables would be turned. I may be an AMD booster, but right now the performance edge goes to the C2D processors in every space but the low end entusiast market.

I didn't read your original post saying it was $150 difference at Dell. Eeek! Definitely go for the C2D.

Isn't it the other way around? I thought the AMD was the cheaper one. OP didn't say which was cheaper, and I don't look for desktops at Dell. Which ever way it is get the cheaper one.

Also the OP listed the choice as a "2 duo 1.86ghz 800" which has to be wrong?
The 6300 has 1.86 Ghz with 1066, while the 4300 is 1.8 with an 800.

The enormous benefit of the C2D can't be realized with a Dell so go with whatever's cheapest for you between the two.
