I searched and searched, but no dice.

I need to enable Hibernation on a 2000 server. The computer supports it, it's available in 2000 pro and XP.

Hibernation on a SERVER makes the server unavailable.
Not a very practical thing to do.

Did you check the Network Policy settings to see if they
are preventing you from enabling hibernation mode?

By default all power saving options are turned off in Windows Server OSes. There's no supported way to put it back in.
Why are you trying to turn on hibernation on a server?

The reason I am trying to enable Hibernation is because of my Energy bill. This is a home server and I would like the server to hibernate after 30 mins of inactivity. I have WOL enabled, so when I need the server (which is in a closet on the patio of my apartment) I just use the batch file that I made to wake it up and ping -t until it becomes available.

I was using Windows XP on the machine when I was testing, it worked no problem. The only problem is that XP will not do Software RAID 5, so I switched to 2000 server, which I had a copy of.

If I cannot get 2000 server to hibernate, I will just go back to XP pro and purchase a RocketRAID 454 card to build my array.

To be honest, you arent going to notice much of a difference n your energy bill. My server uses less than $4 a month to operate

The operating system doesn't have much to do with your power consumption. It's the hardware.

But, if you go to Device manager, Computer, then double click on whatever your pc is called. Now you want to update the drivers. Elect to install manually. There you should get a menu of various setups for your pc. I believe one of the settings enables XP like hibernation.
I don't have 2000 in front of me so I'm going by memory.

You can also setup server this way by pressing F5 in the first 5 seconds the install starts.

Use at your own risk......

If you feel ambitious there is a hack to enable raid 5 in XP. I did it successfully, but it slowed the boot time of the computer waaaaaay down. You need a hex editor to do it. I found a free one that worked well, but this was so long ago, I don't remember what it was.

Here is a forum that talks about it. The link is halfway down the page.

I actually saw that before, but I could not get it to work. When I opened up the files in a hex editor, nothing looked like what was shown on the website.

And even if it did work any hotfix from MS has the potential to undo your changes, causing your hours of fun trying to recover your data.

Got it to work!!! I forgot one important step, do not overwrite the files when in windows. I booted to DOS (FAT32 of course), and overwrote the 3 files. I found the 3 files online already hacked.

Thanks all!
