Is there a guide for remote desktop?

Hello,

I just got a new desktop at college and have my laptop. I have vista business on both of the computers. I have been trying to find guides on how to set it up but I can't find any. I saw someone in my math class double click on an icon on his desktop and could connect immediately to his desktop. How do I set this up? Thanks

I use hamachi on both systems for ip networking (so i don;t need to know my home pc's ip address). Then all you have to do is connect the two computer with hamachi and open the remote desktop and for the connection it will be the hamachi ip address of the desktop pc. then your username will be \desktop_name\user_name.

Does that work with the standard edition of Hamachi now?

When I tried last year with Hamachi, and Windows XP SP2, hamachi couldn't be run as a service, it had to be run as a program as a logged in user. But there was a problem with that and remote desktop. When you logged in as a user the hamachi connection would be temporarily reset. It technically wasn't possible to do remote desktop over hamachi, unless it was running as a service.

I won't pay monthly for hamachi just to run it as a service. Maybe if it was a one time fee of like $20 I might consider it.

I do it with standard hamachi every day. I just keep my account at home logged in all the time. When I remote in it just remotes to that session. Everything thats running stays running.

I use UltraVNC for this. It doesn't log on a different user on the PC you are connecting to but just takes over what's already there. Some Windows RDCs actually log off the current user and log you on and then switch it back which can get in the way. Then just know your IP address (it shouldn't change very often if ever) and you're good to go.

But there are tons of ways to do this as others have pointed out.

I couldn't get VNC to work properly on Vista. It's last official release was July of 2006. That was quite some time before Vista.

Here are some supposed "fixes" for it to work on Vista. Seems like a pain in the ass.

VNC is good for troubleshooting because it leaves the current user logged in, but RDP is far superior if you just want to connect to another one of your own computers. Trying to use a PC with a res of 1920x1200 on a 1280x800 laptop screen is awful, RDP's automatic desktop resize and generally better performance make it a much more desirable solution. Just forward port 3389 (I think) on your router, check enable remote desktop, and write down your IP address (or use hamachi) and you should be good to go.
