I'd like to be able to put our manuals on our machines without having to install a pdf reader.
Currently, all the manuals are written to pdf files.

Is there a good way to convert a pdf to an xps file?

you could try looking here for a lead.

Just curious, but why convert from the well supported and universally used pdf, to xps; which is barely used in Windows, and essentially nonexistent in other platforms?

On windows XP, you'll still have to install the xps viewer...or .NET 3.0 if they don't already have it.

edit: here's a tool

Open in Adobe Reader, print to "Microsoft XPS Document Writer"? (the XPS printer that gets installed with Office...)

But yeah, PDF is the standard. What are the machines used for?

the key is to not have to install a pdf reader. If our customers want to install it on their own, that's fine. I just don't want to have to maintain a pdf reader in our standard image.

If we use XPS, which is already built in to win7, then any updates to the program come through with windows updates...no need for stupid adobe updater running every other day

There are a few ways to do this if you don't mind spending money:

http://www.tallcomponents.com/pdfrasterizer3.aspx

A free solution is somewhat harder to come by. Here are some that might work:

http://www.globalgraphics.com/en/gdoc/

gDoc Creator is a free PDF/XPS creator. I'm not sure it will allow you to convert directly from PDF>XPS as I haven't tried that myself.

If all else fails, here is a MSDN thread which discusses using Ghostscript to render bulk PDF files to images, and then store those images in XPS format:

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsxps/thread/1917fede-bf5c-4c66-92cd-e97cfa0206cc

Good luck!
