Is there a generic repeater available?

A friend of mine needs a generic repeater because they don't have any idea what brand of wireless router signal they're receiving. Any brand out there that will work with more then one kind of router? Or is there a way to find out what brand of router the signal is coming from? (It doesn't say the brand under 'view wireless network") Thanks
