is there a generic line for all versions of linux that would load the install onto a hard drive?i have a multi partion system with an ntfs partition and some fat 16's and fat 32's, and i also have a linux on floppy distro, designed to let you view ntfs drives. I'm wondering if i could copy the whole floppy to one of the fat 16 partitions and rig the bootloader (which resides on a fat 16 partition) to have an option to boot to the ntfs linux os. . .any one know of any ideas? if that might be standard/across all linux os's?

Not sure I understand the Q, but this is the best place to get Linux Qs answered. Helpful group. Good traffic at forums there.

Linux native file system = ext2, altho, like u say, it can use others .. but I heard it's best to use ext2. I use Partition Magic to make my ext2 partitions (MS FDISK for everything else).
