No, but you can get the OEM version of Norton Systemworks Pro (with Ghost) for under $25 from places like Newegg.

For making/restoring an image, or are you trying to clone one HD to another?

AFAIK, there are several free cloning programs on the Ultimate Boot CD, but none for imaging that I know of.

Will the 2003 version of System Works allow an NTFS image? An older version that I have will not but I heard that a newer version will, question is which version.

Can it be run from within Windows itself or will I need a special boot setup?

Ghost 2003 can image NTFS from bootable floppies. Sadly it doesn't make you a nice bootable CD like Acronis True Image (which costs $50).

I don't trust imaging a running OS drive, so I don't remember whether Ghost can do that or not.

Ghost 2003 can make you a bootable CD. And, for that matter, a bootable DVD. I have done so several times.

It does have the annoying habit of not including a mouse driver, and running Ghost restore without a mouse is a bit of a pain, but doable.

No, Ghost 2003 cannot image a running OS. However, it can reboot your system into a semi-DOS mode without using floppies for purposes of creating an image.

i think ghost can make the *images* bootable from a cd or dvd, but i don't think you can make a bootable cd to boot to in the first place, in order to make the image, right? at least that was the problem I ran into recently...

Exactly. At least the version in Systemworks Pro 2003 only gave me the option of creating bootable floppies, not of making a bootable program CD.

If you are willing to use Linux, check this out. This program is what I use to image both my systems and client systems. Although it can not burn directly to CD it can make images to another drive and split them for later burning. There is also a free Partition Magic clone on there as well which also comes in handy. It only took 10 mins to learn how to use the disk and the best thing is that it's free! This disk has saved my a$$ more times than I care to remember, I would say that it works quite well.

Hope it helps..

Most of those rebates are two fold.

One is a straight mail-in rebate.
The second rebate requires that you have an existing version of Ghost and are upgrading.

Nope, an exesting version of ANY symantec, and I believe, but not 100% sure, cause I haven't done it, Macaffee(spelling...I know...can't quite remember how) . anyway, ANY symantec product for sure. read the rebate, it's all in there. and, you don't even have to part w/ the previous symantec product, just prove you already own it, and send in the front page of a manual/or cd.

I just use DD.

DD is a standard unix utility designed to operate low down on file system.

for instance:

dd if=/dev/hda of=drive.img

Will make a image of the harddrive.

dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb

That will duplicate a harddrive if youhave 2 drives with the same size.

You can also work with partitions, with scripts you can do stuff like broadcast images over networks and stuff like that. Everything you can do with ghost you can do pretty much with Ghost with some exceptions.

Of course Ghost is much nicer. But dd works for me.

We may be talking the same thing. Some people get stripped/crippled versions with an OEM package. I do not think that these types qualify for the upgrade. I know that I received a Ghost (1999 vrsion) that will not work under NT or with NTFS. Because it came on the OEM MB CD, it does not qualify.

However, if the 2003 version will do the job, I may just buy a copy of System Works off E-Bay at a lot chaper than the lost $20 upgrade rebate
