is there a free sandbox application ?

they seem to be smaller than vmware, and can do the same thing
barring an os install obviously, what's everyone using?

sandboxie is a different type of sandboxing application compared to the above but works nicely depending on what you're trying to do.

Since you mentioned vmware though I'd assume the former.

I prefer Virtualbox. It's light and works fairly well for my uses. I just virtualize an XP box for testing software. Best thing is it doesn't run a million services like vmware does.

What you seem to be asking for is something like usermode Linux or Linux vserver, neither of which have a Windows equivalent AFAIK.
