I just installed Mandrake 7.2 (i'm a Linux newbie) on my system. I already have Windows ME on the computer as well. I would like to try running Windows within Linux, but I'm not willing to pay to do it. (Hey, if it's for Linux, it should be for free, right? ;) ). I heard about that VNware or whatever it is called, but then I saw the price tag. :disgust: So is there a free program that can do the same thing, or most of the same stuff? I'm sure some of you must do this, it seems like such on obvious thing to want to do.

Here's something that will keep you busy for awhile - try running WINE, a linux app that lets you run Widows apps directly under linux, not in a virtual machine like VMWare. I don't have a link but it is easy to find, it has it's own web page.

I think Bochs will act similiar to VMware but I've never tried it so I'm not sure. I don't have a link but just do a search and it'll pop-up.

I messed around with wine a little bit, it wouldn't run most of the big programs I tried, only little ones. I'll look into WineHQ and Bochs. I want to run it as a virtual machine, not just one or two programs.

plex86 is able to do stuff much like vmware and is gpl, however its not as stable and if you want to do stuff now I would buy either win4lin or vmware unless stuff works in wine for you

<< Plex86 runs Windows95!!!
>>

<< Linux boots in plex86! >>

<< Linux boots in plex86 in special cosimulation mode! >>

<< FreeDOS now runs under Plex86 too. >>
