Is there a free program that tests your hardware for issues?

I been getting random computer shut downs in the middle of gaming. After looking for help in the computer help forum I'm getting a little mixed suggestions but its all hardware related so I'm curious to know if there's any free program out there that will scan my computer and let me know if there's any hardware defects with it to pinpoint exactly, if any, hardware malfunctions are the cause of my issue?

There are a few programs that will do general scans, but IIRC they're more focused on diagnosing software problems related to each piece of hardware (missing or outdated drivers, etc.)

Your best bet is to download memtest86 and burn it to a CD. Use that to test the memory. If that doesn't detect any problems after several passes, download and run hwmonitor or CPU-Z and GPU-Z to log your CPU and GPU temperatures. If they're getting up into the 80C (CPU) / 90-100C (GPU) ranges, that's probably your problem. You can always run the case with the side panel off and a fan blowing in to see if it helps.

software diagnosing computers heh
not so easy
memtest98 and see if it survives that over night.
then you know ram is good ...narrowing it down alittle
cpu stress tests and or looping benchmark 3d tests to max out power draw/heat...
shutdown during stress sounds more like a psu issue though.
