Is there a free or cheap isp that doesn't require you to use their software?

Does this this exist? I know netzero offers free dialup but you have to use their proprietary software. Is there some isp that charges $5 or less a month for 5 hours (or less) of service?

As for DSL reports I can only seem to search for high speed, do they have an option to search for dial-up?

WTF. You never need to use software. Just get the number, know your password and log on and you're on. I configure Earthlink like that all the time for modem users.

You can't connect to netzero without their proprietary software.

Earthlink only offers $21.95 a month dialup. Need something really cheap for this situation.

Thanks, looks like I'll have a couple of options for him ISP wise. This is something I love about these forums. The wealth of knowledge here beats just about anything else.

Access4free is free as long as you use less than 10 hours per month, then they charge you $1 per additional hour up to $10 max. You must provide a credit card number for them to bill to.

I've used them sporadically over the last two years as a back-up ISP when travelling, and have been satisfied.
