Is there a Fan for the Heatsink on a Dell Dimension 4700?

Hey all,

Have this system I'm trying to put together. Why do I see just a Huge Heatsink and those silly green clips but no fan? Was there no fan on this thing? I don't know how that could be with a 3.4 Prescott driving it, but I can't find a fan anywhere that looks like it fits it on the side or top.... Pics? Advice?

Thanks.

Thanks. But are we certain? This is the heat sink that goes ontop of the chip. But I don't see a green air channel. I'll have to look.
Yes, we are certain.

Did you look at the manual yet?

Generally, it's not a good idea to move Dell motherboards to non-Dell cases, nor to move non-Dell motherboards to Dell cases. There can be several issues, one of which is the CPU cooling system.

If you have a Dell 4700 case with no green cooling channel and fan, then somebody removed it. It's attached to the rear of the case and the cooling channel pivots up so you can get to the CPU. The whole assembly slides off if you need to remove it.

No, I've got the case and the original mobo, etc. I just see no green assembly here so I'm confused. I'm going to look around a bit. Thanks.

You can bend up an air duct type device out of cardboard to channel the air flow through the heatsink.
Look at the link in my post.

yup efficiency, case fan does work of cpu fan. not a bad idea at all. but it requires it all fits together so the shroud only works with oem cooler

Dell made a running change for the Dimension 4700. The original fan shroud is shaped like a ski jump (part W5457). There were some cooling issues with the case--you either had trouble keeping your CPU cool or your drives cool, depending on the way the fan blew.

The later run has a box-shaped shroud (part N4399). The fan did a little better job of keeping the case cool, but a number had the fan blowing in the wrong direction.
