Is there a downside to the "Buffer in memory" option?

If your systems crashes or reboots, you lose any blocks that weren't already flushed.

Well, if you don't complete a work unit, you'll lose it when you shutdown the client. Your hard drive gets a break as long as the client is working on a work unit, unless you have a checkpoint file. That's yet another reason to have it work on large WUs.
