Just wanted to know what to do for a pulled hamstring. Mine's been hurting me forever, and it finally took my jock roommate to figure out why the crap the back of my thigh hurt so badly.

So now my question is, how the heck do I fix it??? It hurts and all I want to do is go work out!!! ...I'd rather not take too many days off if I don't have to.

If it is indeed "pulled" then resting it (along with the ice/heat treatments) is about the only thing to do about it. If you exercise it, and it has been pulled, it will never get better.

Sorry for the bad news.

Pulled hamstring? That's going to need surgery, but you can do it yourself. You'll need a scalpel, a mirror, some hot water...

I'm not a doctor, but I play one on the forums. ;)

Rest and massage (Icy Hot) would be good for it. Be sure to stretch it occasionally so it doesn't tighten up.

Treat yourself to a massage. I doubt you would have any problems finding someone from these boards to do it since most of the members are female deprived.

if you are a college student, try your college pool. water therapy is really good and less agravating on your muscles...

For right now, what you need to do is keep it iced. The cold slows down the chemical reactions that cause the inflamation which caused the pain. You should also be stretching it a few times a day. However, you should heat the muscle up before stretching it.

How bad is the injury? Can you walk normally? Is it just sore? For exercise in the meantime, try swimming. Besides, you will burn more calories in a given time period when swimming over any other exercise. Shortens up your workout!

Well, right now I'm keeping a hot water bottle on it. No, I can't walk normally. It seems to be fine when I walk straight forward, but any time I try to turn I get a shooting pain in the upper/back part of my thigh. I've been limping everywhere.

I wish I could swim, but we don't have pools here. Stupid, CHEAP college!

Just wanted to know what to do for a pulled hamstring. Mine's been hurting me forever

How long is forever? RICE therapy helps for acute injury but after 24 hours or so the only beneficial treatment for muscle strains will be rest to allow nature to do it's thing.

If it is indeed "pulled" then resting it (along with the ice/heat treatments) is about the only thing to do about it. If you exercise it, and it has been pulled, it will never get better.

After a day or so ice/heat treatment may make you feel better but it has no effect on recovery. Your recovery will be facilitated by rest, good diet, no alcohol, no smoking, and passive stretching. If you've got cash you can visit a LICENSED sports masseuse or physical therapist who may even give you some electromuscular stimulation therapy (EMS). You can take any over-the-counter pain reliever but if you choose to exercise it will mask the pain and you will curse David for being right.

Well, right now I'm keeping a hot water bottle on it. No, I can't walk normally. It seems to be fine when I walk straight forward, but any time I try to turn I get a shooting pain in the upper/back part of my thigh. I've been limping everywhere.

If you are worried about detraining effect you can exercise you just cannot use that limb for ANYTHING other than passive stretches. I know the heat feels good but you will typically be better served with a loose compressive dressing plus OTC pain reliever. After you've healed you should probably consider altering your training. The most common reasons for hamstring strains are 1) strength imbalance and 2) poor flexibility. Strengthening your hamstrings (after you heal) and improving your flexibility will decrease your future risk of injury.
