I was using my coworkers Nikon D80 with a 50mm F1.8 lens yesterday and noticed that it field of view is different from my Canon 40D with the F1.8

I thought they had the same crop factor. Hers was acting like a standard 50mm lens on a full frame format, my field of view is reduced.

Caveat, i didnt have my camera with me, but I was going by memory. We were shooting in a restaurant.

Canon's have a 1.6x crop factor; Nikon has a 1.5x.

Canon has 1.6x crop factor whereas Nikon has 1.5x crop factor. However, it's not exactly 0.1 crop factor difference as the sensor size, from time to time, changes a bit.
Last time I checked, the difference was about 0.7 or so.

Even though it's same 50mm, the actual FOV can be different; however, there's no way Nikon 50mm on a crop body would be like FF 50mm.

You sure she wasn't using the new 35mm f1.8? It's a crop-body specific lens which would give you a FOV of around what a 50mm is on full frame.

I just checked with her its a 50mm f1.8. Next week i wont be at work but the week after I think I may be able to test out both (mine and hers) and see if there is a FOV difference.

It's noticeable (when I compare m D300 vs Bro's 40D), but not as significant as the diff between FF vs. 1.5. Try an Olympus or any 4/3rd with their 2.0x crop and you will notice a big difference even between that and a 1.5

Did you compare a photo take from the same place, same settings, just a look through the view finder?

Sure, the crop factor will be a minor difference, but I believe there is an additional small difference in the view finders on those two cameras, giving the impression that you are capturing a slightly different size photo as well..
