using a ps2 i got this year and a toshiba 1200 dvd player my svcd doesn't work, but it runs fine on my pc with windvd. is a svcd only supported with newer dvd players? the toshiba 1200 can play normal vcd so i thought a svcd should work. what would make a the svcd work on a pc dvdrom, is there some difference between dvdroms and players?

Well, an-out-of-box-PS2* will only play DVD movies, it won't play VCD or SVCD.

Most DVD players like your Toshiba will support VCDs, but not necessarily. The drive usually has a sticker indicating what it will play, and this information would also be in the manual. If the player does support SVCD, it would also be on the sticker/in the manual. If it isn't, don't expect otherwise.

A PC dvd-rom drive reads VCDs as MPEG1 video, and SVCDs as MPEG2 video. So it'll play either without problems if you have the appropriate software. MPEG1 will play just fine in anything that will play MPEG1 video. MPEG2 usually requires a codec, but luckily it's one your DVD software provides since DVDs are just MPEG2 as well.

*I say out-of-the-box, since given enough bored people, add-ons and mods inevitably come out to allow you to do stuff you can't initially 😛

After reading my own link.😉

there may be some hope for you after all.

After reviewing all the other reports and testing this myself for many time I've almost given up on playing SVCD movies using this DVD player. However, recently I've been able to play SVCD CDRWs with this player, I'll explain how.

This is done in two steps (I assume you already have an SVCD MPEG2 file)
* First we make and cue/bin image
* We burn it using Nero or whatever

Use a program called "VCDEasy" - available from http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcdeasy.htm. Under "Settings", choose (S)VCD and mark all three SVCD checkboxes (Use MPEGAV/ENTRYSVD instead..., Update scan data ..., Show the ....).

Create the image (there is help for this on VCDHELP) and burn using whatever burning software you prefer.

This worked for me. I'm going to try subtitles but for that to work we'll need a miracle.

I think this way will trick your dvd player into thinking it's a vcd when it's really a Svcd mpg. 🙂

for SVCD, you should buy Chinese or Korean brand dvd player.
Most Japanese brand dvd players sold in the US don't support anything, but for those sold in the Asia market do support everything. If you want a Japanese brand to play everything, you should buy a parallel imported one.

That's just not true, there are lots of dvd players that play vcd,svcd,xvcd,mp3, it all depends on the model.

Check out

this list of players ,this way you can be sure who plays what before you buy.

I just got a JVC XV-S300BK DVD player since my Toshiba DVD wouldn't play them. This thing plays DVD, CD, MP3, VCD, SVCD. It is very inexpensive and works great! I think I could take a dump on a blank CD and it would play it.
