Is there a difference between NIC cards ?

My Belkin NIC card just went down and I was forced to use the Realtec xxxxxx that came onboard my mobo. Is there any difference in the preformance of an onboard NIC and a PCI NIC card ?
Thanks,

Except in very special circumstances, an onboard NIC is actually connected via the PCI bus and is therefore not inherently different than an outboard PCI NIC.

There are better and worse performing chips out there. RealTek isn't so good. HOWEVER, if you're just doing home or small office networking, you're probably not super sensitive to performance and therefore you'll be fine with the on-board NIC.
