cat5 is consider regular networking cable...it is cross-wired...crossover cable is categorized as crossover but i think it is straight-through...no wires are crossed.

Cat 5 refers to the type of cable, crossover refers to the pinout.

A crossover cable routes the send pins to the receive of the other end, & vice versa, eliminating the need for a hub or switch when connecting two devices.

Viper got it...

CAT5 is the specification of the Cable regarding general layout and other requirements.

In addition there is the normal 1:1 cable and the crosslink version. 1:1 only works with hubs and switches between the computers. If you want to connect two network cards directly, you need a crosslink version.
I think at least two pairs of cables are changed on one side compared to the 1:1 cable...

picardal,

What do you plan on doing?

If you have a hub get the pc to hub, which is a straight through Cat5 cable.
If you're directly connecting two computers together, as in a proxy server situation, get the computer to computer Cat5, which is most likely a cross-over cable.

PC to hub is regular cat5 cable, while PC to PC is crossover cable. If you are using a hub, switch, or router, then buy the PC to hub. Or, if you will directly connect a PC to another PC, use the crossover cable (PC to PC).

EDIT: ST4RCUTTER beat me to it.
