If your gonna upgrade make sure ya do a clean install. Clean installs always work out better.

WinMe is offered in 3 ways:
Promotional upgrade (for only Win98, Win98SE only)
Upgrade (for Win95, 98, 98SE)
Full (duhhhh)

While the promotional is usually found for $50, you must already have Win98 or Win98SE on your hard drive. You can only upgrade on top of your current O/S! (VERY BAD IDEA)

The "upgrade" version will allow you to install on a new/fresh format hard drive. You will however need your Win95, 98, 98SE CD available because it will ask for it while doing the install. It needs it for verification. This can usually be found in stores for around $90.

The "full" version is overpriced and not needed if you own a prior WinX O/S!

Like IamDavid said.... make sure it's a clean install. Since it sound like you are building a new PC, I suspect it's a newly formatted H.D.

So the question is.... which upgrade version do you own?

This is incorrect a Promotional Upgrade WILL do a full install all you will need is a Windows 98/98se CD for the WIN Me install to reference to. It will ask you to take out your WIN Me disk insert your WIN 98 or 98se disk it will scan it for about a min. then it will tell you to put the WIN Me install disk back in and it will complete the installation of WIN Me.

Gomezz.... Are you saying that you did that and it worked? I ask because I have heard from a reliable source that it does not function like that. Since I have not personally installed any WinMe system that way (I own the full), I am still unsure....

Can we get comments from people that have done a clean install with the "promotional upgrade" version (using the original 98 CD only for authentication). I for one would like to know for sure...

I have done a half dozen full installs of ME from the promotion disk. It works just like Gomezz says it does.

To save time I have also "preloaded" ME promo and a full release copy of Win 98SE on the d: partition (copied from an existing machine before installation in the new machine). I boot the new machine from a Win ME Startup disk, switch to d:\win98me and type setup. When prompted for the Win 98SE disk I just browse to d:\win98se\win98. The rest is simple . . .
