there is the stress test thing i beleive

and the game has allready been warezed BUT you cant play it yet and seeing as valve has to activate it, i dont see how pirate copies will work

The pirates need simply to disconnect that part of the software. I will be utterly shocked if there is not a single player version of HL2 on the net for download in the future, after this has been circumvented.

I agree that the lack of a demo is really lame.

Yea if they can get around CD checks, I dont see whats holding them back from online checks. Its pretty much the same idea. Im sure the game (Steam preload) has been unlocked on PC's but I bet the exe/dlls arent loaded yet, so its just a bunch of maps, textures, and such.

Who says there won't be a demo eventually though? Wasnt DoomIIIs demo out a while after the game was? I've seen a few games that didnt have demos till at least a month after retail release of the full thing.
