Is there a deadline for your employer to get your W2 to you?

My wife changed jobs about halfway through the year last year and we have yet to see a W2 from her previous employer. I would really love to get my damn taxes in the mail since I have all the other forms. Anyone have an answer for me?

Last day in January was what I thought the deadline was supposed to be. (I could be wrong). But if she made less than $400 at that job they will not mail one.

Can you do the taxes online or on the phone? If so you don't need the actual W2 since her last paystub should list everything you need.

She made more than $400, so what kind of actions do I need to take to get these morons in gear?

They have to be postmarked by no later than Jan 31st. When they acutally GET to you is up to the post office. I am waiting on my wife's W2's as well. Damn it.

Well, the company is local and it's now the 11th........how freaking long does it take to deliver an envelope? I could have walked there and back by now.

The law states that it is supposed to be sent by the 31 Jan. However, there are no penalties stated for non-complience that I have found.

Start off by calling them and asking where her W2 is. Then, if they deny you, get an attorney involved.

if you have not received the w-2 by the end of Jan, you contact the employer.

"If you still do not receive your W-2 by Feb.15, contact the IRS for assistance toll free at 1- 800-829-1040. When you call, have the following information handy..."

there are penalties (fines), but they are way lame. $15 for 30 days late, $30 til Aug 1, and $50 after that.

hope this helps.

Ah...thanks very much. I'll get on the horn with the company once I'm home. :)
