Seems like FaceBook makes it really easy on kids to harass and talk trash about each other. It also makes it very convenient. I mean, it is really easy. You can type whatever you want and post an offensive picture on someone's profile WITHOUT actually looking the other person in the face...

Given the increased number of suicides at our schools, maybe the entire "social network" experience leads to overexposure for some people and makes them more vulnerable?

It has come to this: You can just try to anonymously "friend" bunch of people wihtout actually coming over to them in person "live" and saying hi and introducing yourself. I know a total 56 year old creep who "friended" bunch of 20 something women using his profile picture from like 20 years ago. That's cheating and dangerous.

We have an inhouse cop at the high school I work at, and he said since facebook has become popular he has been a lot busier dealing with cyber bullying. His is the only computer that has access to the page, and he always has students in there showing him things for disciplinary action. He says he sees a lot of nudity too, kids love showing their stuff.

So in our school, the answer is definitely yes.

Who fucking cares? If you can't take the harassment, get off the internet.

That's not to say I think what goes on is right, but WTF? It's facebook...just log off and don't go back.

Have you seen US media recently? FB this FB that...Let McDonalds be your friend at FB...
Every teenager has FB page. You have to have one to "fit in"
If you want to be a pop kid, there is no other choice.
Unless you are one of these "weird" kids...

My kid is going to be one of those weird kids. I have a retired packeteer on my home network, and facebook, myspace and twitter will be blocked. I'd like to content filter youtube, but the hardware solutions for that site are pretty pricey, so I'll need to figure out how to do it with sw, or just block it completely.

Isn't there a block button on Facebook or something?

people can be "de-friended" & security can be defined so that non-friends will not even know that someone is even a member of FB

Adults & kids need to be counseled to not add people that they do not know to their friends list. How hard is it to understand that if you do not talk to someone, never have, and never have seen someone ... that they are not a friend?

correlation != causation

facebook didn't start any kind of bullying that didn't exist before

It definitely makes it easier for "ordinary people" aka sheep. I can post shit about you WITHOUT looking you in the eye. It is kind of like Internet Trolling, but for the masses.

A lot of times the issue is with the friends that get in a quarrel IRL and they take it to facebook, and get really nasty posting pics on each other's pages and writing comments. You can defriend after the fact, but it is probably too late, and everyone else in the school has seen your page.

There was one chick last year who was trying to be cool, and on her facebook someone called her a slut, and jokingly she agreed. The whole school erupted, and all of her fb friends turned on her and tore her page apart in 1 night. She actually called the police, and they had to make phone calls asking others about the harassment. There is nothing the cops can do legally, but they usually follow-up with calls to the parents of the offending kids.

It's stupid and a waste of time. Kids shouldn't be on the page at all.

Ups, too late now - everybody is making big $$$$, the big corporations first and foremost. All of these marketing data available is just too difficult to pass on. Good luck trying to stop it.
