Is there a chart or forumla for determining the IPC comparison of a Northwood and Prescott?

3.4GHz Northwood vs. x GHz Prescott. What does x have to be to equal the cpu?

I'm using a 3.4GHz NW lappie and the cpu is quite fast - checked the L2 at 512KB. I'd imagine it's cooler too but I don't have a 478 prescott to put in here.

Old Northwoods are great, it is slightly faster than prescott at same clocks and runs considerably cooler also. The newer 650 Pentium 4 are roughtly same speed as the 3.4 ghz Northwood.

Why u ask?

Just surprised at the speed of this two year old+ notebook. It's a Dell and we have newer Dell desktops at 3.6GHz and this thing seems to "smoke" it. Of course heaven know$ what the owner has done to it. :Q

My northwood at 3.45ghz was able to keep up with my Prescott @3.82ghz in a lot of applications. The Prescott did have an advantage at video encoding, and obviously SSE3 enabled apps, but put out quite a bit more heat.

Cpus havent became much faster in the last 2 + years, if you dont count dualcores. Also unless the hardware is the same in both systems it prolly would be hard to compare. But yea thats the fastest noethwood ever released.

Aside from SSE3, you won't see much difference with respect to IPC. You have to compare different architectures, like PentiumM/Core and the various AMD offerings if you want to see a significant difference in IPC.

Oh definitely I have an FX60 at 2.90G and it definitely mops the floor with the P4's. 😀
