Is there a BIG difference between 256 vs 512 ram in a notebook

Topic states it. To go from 256mb to 512, is another $188 ouch! So i am wondering, does that much ram make a difference with a P4-M 1.6ghz.

While i am here, is there a note worthy difference between a 1.6 and a 1.8 gigz laptop?

thanks guys.

I doubt you would notice a difference between 1.6GHz and 1.8GHz under most circumstances (other than maybe heat!). Running on battery both of those are going to run considerably slower and the difference between them would be marginal. Does anyone know the CPU speeds when these run on battery? The difference between 256MB and 512MB is incredible with Win2K or WinXP under most circumstances. I would go with the slower CPU and put the extra money into RAM or hard drive space. When I bought my laptop (Dell Inspiron 7000--it's got some age!) I bought a single 256MB chip so I could upgrade later. Then I went to Crucial and purchased another 256MB for cheaper than it would have cost if I had purchased it with the system. Check into that option and you might save a few $$$ too.

You might be able to get even more for less money. When I priced one a few months ago from dell if I selected 128mb instead of 256mb, the amount I saved was enough for me to buy a seperate 512mb chip!
