Is there a better way? (itunes)

I've tried googling and haven't come up with much. I've have iTunes on my notebook and my music stored on a WHS. Currently to update my library when I add music to the server I do the File->add folder. My library isn't huge by any means at ~6GB's but there has to be a better way. Is there any way to get it to auto update from the folder on the server?

As far as I know, autoupdate only works in iTunes on the specified folder, and you have to let iTunes manage your music. I do believe that you can relocate this folder (or the pointer to it), but then iTunes could monkey with your music structure.

But, if you dont' mind a 3rd party program, iTunes Library Updater can monitor folders then add them to your library. I haven't actually used it, but I snagged it from Lifehacker.

I have resorted to using the auto add folder. I pointed iTunes to the folder on the server and drop them in the auto add folder. It works but I hate the way iTunes organizes the music. I like in just one long string and not three layers deep of folders. Oh well, I guess I'll have to learn to live with it.

I have 2 questions;

1: Do you use anything other than iTunes for playback/manipulation?
2: If not, then what do you care what the folder structure looks like?

on my computers i have a folder called c:\backup. under that i keep all my data including itunes crap. itunes will be in c:\backup\itunes. every once in a while i just backup the entire folder to an external drive.

a lot easier than messing with home servers and whatever else

Not really. I use media monkey to do the tags before uploading to the server. Just personal preference I guess.

I can appreciate that, and I used to be the same way, wanting my music organized my way. But then after I reached a certain number of songs, not all of which were ripped from CDs, I just stopped caring and simply wanted it to be easy to get at from within the player. I really don't care what it looks like on my hard drive. So long as I can quickly and easily get at the particular song I want, I am happy. iTunes can organize it however it likes.
