Is there a better video editor than kdenlive?

I find Kdenlive has lot of weird quircks, like most effects don't allow to modify them within the same clip. For example if I want to adjust the volume I can't make one part louder or less loud within the same, it's all or nothing. So I need to split up the clips if I want to change the volume. There is no smooth transitions. Most video editors will let you do that right within the time line directly. Not Kdenlive. you can do fade in and fade out, but there is no volume line where you can add key frames, like pretty much every other editor I've ever used in Windows.

There's also a weird quirck where when you remove an effect, it still applies to the clip. So you need to delete the clip and readd it. This can be painful if it's a long video as you have to try to go find that spot again. There's yet another quirck where occasionally a clip is stuck. You can't move it. So again the only way is to delete it and start over. So many other quicks like this.

Worse case I'm going to just look into a Windows VM with Windows based software but not sure how well video editing software would even work. Anything multimedia related tends not to run very well in a VM if it even runs at all.

I tried that, it does not actually do anything. I don't get any options in the effects box, like it shows in that video. I have a feeling the version in Mint is also buggy or really old. There's just lot of things that work so weirdly that it does not seem right.

Maybe older version 15.12.3 works according to user paul?

Ok so turns out double clicking on time line I can add key frames and then manipulate it. But there's still lot of quircks with this program that are annoying. I'm hoping I can do better, but it seems there's not much options out there. At least not ones that would be part of package manager. Found some obscure ones but they arn't in the repo and I hate dealing with 3rd party repos as it sometimes breaks stuff.

One thing I DO like about kdenlive is that the file format for the project is actually plain text. So I could in theory automate certain things if I wanted to and it would generate/edit the file. That may be my best bet if I can't find anything I may still be able to automate certain tasks.
