Is there a better program that replaces CHKDSK?

i even tried Norton's Disk Doctor, which made me reboot and ran CHKDISK itself.

chkdsk is about the best, written by the people that wrote the OS and disk structure. Later versions are better, so if you have a Win2003 CD with SP1 slipstreamed into it, that's the best version to run if you have an issue.
