My father wants to put some old vhs home movies on dvd. Does a machine exist that you can simple put a vhs tape in one part and a blank dvd in the other part and hit record? I made a huge mistake and ask some guy at best buy and I don't think he knew what a vhs tape was.

Is their one that is recommended?

I'm pretty sure I've seen those on sale. Call up your local BB or other Electronics store and ask. Or checkout their website.

Nothing is idiot-proof ... idiots are too damn resourceful! ;)

Having said that there are many DVD/VCR combo units still available that will do this but most are a PITA to use.

The closest thing I can think of is a DVD Recorder and a separate VHS hooked up to it.

So there is not a vhs/dvd combo drive that does it?

I keep hearing conflicting reports from different people. (not here)

It's a few years old, but proof such a contraption exists.

I have that Sony they have listed and it's a piece of junk. Me and another friend got this model at the same time and readily admit that we wished we had gotten non-Sony models. I had this tape that I really wanted to back up to DVD and the Sony wouldn't do it due to copy protection. I was like grrr wtf?! Anywho, if you just want to directly copy 2 hour tapes to dvd then it just might be the model for you. Anything greater than that and the video suffers as you decrease the qual (to fit on the disc).

Proper conversion is not a simple process.

If you just want to convert VHS->DVD you can buy a combo unit but the quality will be poor.

Whatever you do, never throw away your old VHS tapes.

This is what we did, but the only problem was having to run it all the way through, so what we did is bought a cheap 13" tv and hooked it up to the DVD recorder. It was cool watching all the old home movies again.
