Is the writing on the wall, or is this a time of opportunity?

Well well well, how the tide has turned. Brief synopsis since I know everyone's ADD kicks in after a few lines:

-Started working for this company in December 2004
-Attractive long term employment, no history of layoffs and very low turnover for a helpdesk
-Small workforce, ~15 people on the helpdesk (we handle about 500,000 end users)
-Decent pay, good benefits

It seems that things happen in bursts, a few months ago we turned over 3 employees in the same general time period. There was a slight change of management but that shouldn't have affected much.

Fast forward to today: I was just informed by a co-worker that our 5th full-time employee has resigned in the past two weeks. She worked as a temp for several months, and just recently was announced to be full-time a few weeks ago.

I know situations change with people all the time, but 5 people in 2 weeks (in addition to the 3 that left several months ago) is a little disconcerting.

Is this a bad sign, or is this a time of opportunity for me? I'm not aware of any current advancement opportunities, but hey... something is going on, but I'm not sure how to react.

i notice resignations often happen in waves. My theory is that people start talking to each other and influence each other (either by talking up how good it is "out there" or how bad it is at the current place). when it starts snowballing, people start thinking and convincing themselves of "hmmm, yeah, maybe i can do better out there" or "hmm, it is kinda crappy here."

if you are content in your situation and like what you do, then make it your own decision.

wow, it's only tuesday

The wall on which the prophets wrote
Is cracking at the seams.
Upon the instruments of death
The sunlight brightly gleams.
When every man is torn apart
With nightmares and with dreams,
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
As silence drowns the screams.

Between the iron gates of fate,
The seeds of time were sown,
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known;
Knowledge is a deadly friend
When no one sets the rules.
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools.

Confusion will be my epitaph.
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it we can all sit back
and laugh.
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying,
Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying.

I have been the last rat on the sinking ship too many times. As soon as a place starts taking on water I leave now.

I wouldn't just sit idly-by... at least you sent out resumes...

Indeed. It has been a rather long time coming actually. My original manager got promoted to the corporate user services manager. When he was the helpdesk manager, things were cool. When he was promoted, one of our tier 2's was promoted into his position - a person with call-center-mill type of background. Things haven't been as nice since then.

Sure, it's not bad. I'm not blaming anyone, but it went from no turnover to nearly half of our fulltime staff turned over. That is never a good thing.

Either way, I've determined that I need to be making more anyway. Something more financially satisfying is in the cards.

Ask to have a meeting with the highest person in mgmt that you can contact. Express your concerns about the turnover and see how they respond.

It might be a chance for you to get a substantial promotion.

Oh, make sure your TPS reports are up to date.
