okay, i regret getting this copy from my friend. I want to reinstall win2k so that I can get to my files, burn them, then wipe win2k off of the thing, but how do I reinstall win2k again? The cd i have isn't bootable.

I want to reinstall the system, but keep the data i have, just overwriting the old system files.

UPDATE: THANK YOU SSP! I just saved all my files, and will be reformating back to win98 tomorrow! 🙂

Yes it is bootable. And it also offers the options of setting up your pc the way you want.

well, the one my friend gave me isn't the real one, i want to reinstall it because the partition i got now is messed. I need to get my data back real fast.

I'm guessing maybe you have the RTM version? Use the make bootdisk program.

Its in the bootdisk directory, and the program is called makeboot.exe

yeah, but i don't want to go through the 4 disks, but if i do, will it still give me the option to reinstall win2k again but still keep the data (files)?

You don't need a boot disk.

do into the i386 dir and type winnt

then sit back and enjoy.

/EDIT You may need like a win98 boot disk to enable your cdrom and be able to get into the i386 dir. I found a great site for downloading the boot disk files. Only 1 disk, compared to 4.

It's the self-destruct command. You computer will explode. Will look really cool.

🙂

Anyways, that will get the install going for ya. You can't get into DOS?
Do you have ANY operating system on your computer? You will need to explain your situation a little bit more so I can understand your problem better.

Heres my main problem. I installed win2k onto my 30gb HD, it got f*cked and won't boot up. It would freeze up. I have 1 year's worht of email in that partition, 1 gb of mp3s, 2gb of DIVXs, and some pictures of hot chicks i collected for about 2 years already (i CAN"T lose these! 😉)

When installing win2k again, I don't want to keep my 9gb Win98 HD( the one i am on now) connected because i don't want to overwrite this one by mistake.

So when I reinstall win2k, it'll only be that 30gb NTFS hd connected. How would I get into DOS?

I would say dump your sh1t someplace safe and startover. I know that win9x should be installed first before win2k if you wanna dually. But if win2k is seriously fvcked like you say it is, I'd start over.

If you wanna dump your stuff you can send it here (that is ofcourse you include the 'hot chicks').

dump it? I want to keep it! all of those files are on the win2k NTFS partition, its like a case (that NTFS partition) full of treasures (my data) that needs to be busted so i can retrieve the treasures (reinstalling win2k, but keeping the data). wow, that was a good analogy 🙂

There's probably a way to save it. In fact if you get win2k setup to load you might be given an option to "repair win2k" or set it up..I'd just keep going until it absolutely wants you to format, but if you can get past that (don't know if you can) then your pr0n stash should be safe. 🙂

How would you get into dos? You can install windows but can't figure this out?!?!?!

Ok, get a DOS boot disk. Like the WIN98 one that loads CDROM drivers. repeat - You NEED a DOS disk with CDROM drivers. Boot the computer with it. Put the WIN2K cd in the drive. Change to the i386 dir and run winnt.exe

Setup will commence.

I promise.

Easier way - go to any functional system and go to the BOOTDISK directory.

run makeboot or mkboot32 to create your set of 4 boot disks. Boot to disks, insert CD. Will be able to read the necessary NTFS volume to begin a reinstall.

Stop making this so hard people.
